According to a 2023 poll by New YouGov polling, a majority of Americans (65%) believe the United States is more divided than usual.
A survey conducted by National Public Radio in 2022 found that 64 percent of Americans believed our democracy is in danger and crisis.
· In a national poll conducted by Quinnipiac University in 2022, 76 percent of respondents reported that political instability within the United States is a bigger danger to our nation than are external adversaries.
A Pew Research Center study determined in 2020 that 77 percent of Americans believed our nation was more divided than it had been before the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Why Is Our Nation Divided?
There are many reasons offered for this divide including that
our two-party system forces debate over a wide range of issues into just two camps and
political identity and other identities (religious, racial, ideological) have recently become uniquely aligned.
But a major reason for our national divide is the assault in the media, in social media, and by political candidates on fact.
How can we agree on anything when we can’t agree on what is true?
When we don’t know what and whom to believe?
When political leaders spread fictions that are designed to deceive?
When they deliberately question fact?
That’s where we come in.
The American people need an ally in fighting the war on facts. Citizens for American Principles (CfAP) is committed to uncovering misinformation, disinformation, and conspiracy theories used for political gain . . .
. . . so we all can find out where
we actually stand on the issues.
The Assault on Fact
A fact is that which is shown to be true. Unlike a belief or an opinion, a fact can be verified.
But politicians, some media outlets, and many social media accounts irresponsibly or deliberately spread messages that cannot be verified. Their misinformation, disinformation, and conspiracy theories sway people to one side or another.
